Where it Grows/distribution･growing country(分布・産地) †

Throughout the Eastern U.S., commercial concentration is in the Mid-west and states around Appalachian.
米国東部全域。
産地としては中西部およびアパラチアン地域。

Main aspect/main feature(主な特徴) †

The sapwood is white with a red tinge, while the heartwood is light to dark reddish brown.
It is a litte darker than European Beech and has color heterogeneity.
The wood is generally straight-grained with a close uniform texture.
辺材は紅白色、心材は淡紅褐色から濃紅褐色。
ヨーロピアンビーチに比べやや色が濃く、色むらあり。
一般に木目は通っており、木肌は密。

Machining performance(加工性能) †

Beech works readily with most hand and machine tools.
It has good nailing and gluing properties and can be stained and polished to a good finish.
The wood dries fairly rapidly but with a strong tendency to warp, split and surface check.
It is subject to a high shrinkage and moderate movement in performance.
手動、自動工具のいずれにも適しており、釘、接着剤によい。
ステイン、つや出し加工による仕上がりも美しい。
かなり乾燥も早いが、そり、割れ、干割れなどを起こしやすい。
収縮率は高く、少々くるいやすい。

Physical properties(物理特性) †

Beech is classed as heavy, hard, strong, high in resistance to shock and highly suitable for steam bending.
重硬で強く、衝撃強度も高い。
スチーム曲げに最適。

Decay durability/Decay resistance(耐久性) †

Rated as non-resistant to heartwood decay, and liable to attack by common furniture beetle and longhorn beetle, but permeable for preservation.
心材の耐朽性はない。
害虫の被害を受けやすいが、浸透性があり防腐処理に適している。

Availability(入手状況) †

In America:Limited for low classification.
In Japan:extreamly limited availability because of low demand and diffusion of European Beech.
米国内では、等級の低いものに限られる。
日本国内では、需要が低いこと、ヨーロピアンビーチが普及していることからかなり限定される。

Main Uses(主要用途) †

Furniture, doors, flooring, millwork, paneling, brush handles.
It is particularly suitable for food and liquid containers since there is no odor or taste.
家具、ドア、フローリング、内装造作材、パネル材、筆やはけ類の柄。
無味無臭のため、特に食品容器に適している。
