Where it Grows/distribution･growing country(分布・産地) †

Eastern U.S., principally Northern and the states around the fifth lakes.
米国東部。主に北部および五大湖沿岸州

Main aspect/main feature(主な特徴) †

Yellow birch has a white sapwood and light reddish brown heartwood.
The wood is generally straight-grained with a fine uniform texture.
辺材は白色、心材は淡紅褐色で、一般的に木目が通り木肌も密。

Machining performance(加工性能) †

The wood works fairly easily, glues well with care, takes stain extremely well, and nails and screws satisfactorily where pre-boring is advised.
It dries rather slowly with little degrade, but it has moderately high shrinkage, so is susceptible to movement in performance.
加工はかなり容易で、注意すれば接着にも適する。
ステイン、つや出し加工に優れ、事前に穴開け加工を施せば釘やねじも使用できる。
乾燥による損傷はほとんどないが比較的時間がかかる。
収縮率はやや高く、くるいが出やすい。

Physical properties(物理特性) †

The wood of yellow birch is heavy, hard and strong.
It has very good bending properties, with good crushing strength and shock resistance.
重硬かつ強い。
曲げ性能に優れ、圧縮、衝撃に強い。

Decay durability/Decay resistance(耐久性) †

Non-resistant to heartwood decay.
Liable to attack by common furniture beetle.
Moderately resistant to preservative treatment but sapwood is permeable.
心材は耐朽性がない。
害虫の被害を受けやすく、防腐処理は中程度に難しいが、辺材は適する。

Availability(入手状況) †

In America:Reasonable availability, but more limited if selected for color,red birch(heartwood) or white birch(sapwood).
In Japan:Growing availability to use flooring or furniture.
米国内では、かなり普及しているが、色によってレッドバーチ(心材)とホワイトバーチ(辺材)に分けることができるが、限りがある。
日本では、フロアーや家具に使用されており、増加しつつある。
